“If you take care of birds, you take care of most of the environmental problems in the world”

— Thomas Lovejoy

This installation, part of Muddy Measures: When Wetlands and Heritage Converse—an exhibition by the Centre for Advanced Studies "Inherit: Heritage in Transformation"—was on view at the Tieranatomisches Theater in Berlin from 12 June to 19 July 2025. I had the pleasure of collaborating with Gabriele Pinna (LIPU – Italian League for Bird Protection) to reflect on what birds can teach us about the health of wetlands.

Birds weave together water, land, and air as they journey across diverse landscapes, both near and far. Their presence shapes ecosystems—enriching biodiversity and acting as barometers of environmental change. Within wetlands, they play a pivotal role in the food web, serving as natural pest controllers and helping to maintain ecological balance.

The installation featured materials provided by LIPU, along with nature photography by Alberto Cherchi and Gabriele Espis.
